With the recent release of the Blackberry Q5 Red Edition in the UK we review what the Blackberry Q5 and Q10 models have in common and how they differ.   Two of the three latest Blackberry smart phones to be running on the new Blackberry 10 operating system, the third being the Blackberry Z10, we take a closer look at how they compare.

Blackberry Q5 Vs Blackberry Q10 Review Comparison

Full Qwerty keyboard smart phones featuring Blackberry’s new powerful BB 10 mobile operating system, these devices are evenly matched when it comes to the touch screen display sporting 3.1″ screens with a resolution of 720 x 720p and a pixel density of 329 ppi (the Q10’s is 330 ppi).

But that’s were the screen display similarities start and finish as the Q5 uses IPS LCD technology whereas the Q10 features super AMOLED technology which gives better viewing angles and richer colour contrast.

A mid-range device the Blackberry Q5 made using polycarbonate materials costs less than its sibling the Blackberry Q10 that sports altogether a more premium looking design, making it the more affordable option of the two phones.

BB 10 Operating System software features

A feature set shared by both smart phones courtesy of the new BB 10 OS include Blackberry’s pre-loaded BBM Video with screen share, Blackberry Hub and Blackberry’s Balance technology which lets you create multiple profiles for added security and thanks to BB 10 users can download from a wide range of apps, music and videos using the Blackberry World storefront.

4G enabled, users can enjoy super fast download speeds on LTE networks of up to 100mbps and make the most of the NFC support with both the Blackberry Q10 and Q5 variants.

Aside from the display which we have already mentioned, the camera is another key comparison.   Whilst the Blackberry Q5  sports a fairly reasonable 5 mega pixel camera, the Q10 uses a more respectable 8 mega pixel shooter but the front-facing camera remains the same at 2 MP with 720p HD video recording.

When it comes to processing power the Blackberry Q10 uses a dual-core 1.5 GHz Qualcomm S4 Snapdragon chipset with 2 GB of RAM which although not varying hugely from the Q5’s 1.2GHz dual-core processor and 2 GB RAM, does improve on overall performance.  Albeit not by a margin that would probably be that noticeable to the user especially when multi-tasking.

There’s little in it when comparing battery size however the Q5 uses a fixed Li-Ion battery whereas the Q10’s is removable and offers somewhat better battery life performance.  The Q10 sees the internal storage doubled boosting the Q5’s 8 GB or memory to 16 GB and microSD expansion up from 32GB up from 64GB.

As for size, the dimensions of these two devices are in the same ball park so therefore negligible but the Q10 is heavier tipping the scales at 139 g in comparison to the Q5’s 120g.

Review Conclusion – our thoughts

Both smart phones reap the benefits of 4G connectivity and the new BB 10 OS smart features, which is a vast improvement over previous models, but the Q10 does offer a faster processor out of the two, has a bigger camera, better screen quality and is more aesthetically pleasing however the Q5 offers good value for money.
